These origins include salvia azurea native to central and eastern north america, salvia nemorosa native to western europe and western asia, salvia guaranitica also known as blue anise sage, braazilian sage, giant blue sage, or sapphire sage native to southern south america, salvia ballatiflora sage native to rocky, sandy, and gravelly soils in Texas, and lastly salvia farinacea native to central and western Texas and New Mexico. The name Salvia comes from the Latin word salveo, which means "be well." These plants are historically known to carry medicinal properties and were created and utilized by indigenous tribes. The natives called it "Grandmother sage," giving it a status of how long it has been used in spiritual practices. Blue sage was used to cleanse, purify, dispel negative energy, and promote spiritual strength. It was also burned during ancestor ceremonies by shamans for protection and safe passageway of their ancestors traveling from and back to the spirit realm.
