The term African American was influenced by a well-known civil rights leader by the name of Reverend Jesse Jackson. He urged the modern day black Americans also known as Negros to use this term instead of using the terms black or colored. His knowledge of American history and how African men and women both were brought to America and enslaved alongside American Indians heavily influenced the political proposal. The use of the new term was stated by Jackson to give black people in America a proper historical connection to our African ancestral roots. Some hoodoo practitioners identify with this term, and some don't, but most know where the term stems from. Hoodoo was invented by Africans & Americans who were enslaved in America together. They combined Christianity, Indigenous, and African spiritual practices together and invented hoodoo in secret as an act of rebellion, redemption, and freedom.
