The word's orgins can be traced back to the Rig Veda, the oldest Hindu text. The word "Rig Veda" is derived from the Sanskrit words meaning rig "praise", a veda, meaning "knowlege".  In ancient text the word karma simply referred to rituals and sacrificial actions.
